Choosing a Tower

5 questions

Platform height is the level of the deck you stand on. Working height is the platform height plus about two metres, which is how high an average adult can comfortably reach. Tower height is the overall height of the structure including the guardrails. When choosing, start with the highest point you need to reach and match it to the working height.

Industrial towers are built for daily professional and site use. Trade towers suit contractors and decorators who move between jobs often. Domestic DIY towers are designed for home projects like painting, guttering and window work. If the tower will be used for business or on a commercial site, choose an EN 1004 certified Industrial or Trade tower.

A single width tower (0.85 m wide) fits through doorways and narrow passages and is easier to move. A double width tower gives a larger working platform, more room for materials and extra stability at height. Choose double width for longer jobs or when two people need to work side by side.

For business use, commercial sites and most professional work, a tower certified to EN 1004 is expected under UK work at height rules. For home use it is not a legal requirement, but certification is the clearest sign that a tower has been independently tested for strength and stability.

Yes. Most towers are modular, so you can add frames, braces, platforms and stabilisers to reach a greater height later. Look for the upgrade options listed on each product page, or contact us with the tower you own and the height you need.

Safety and Use

5 questions

Yes, on firm, level ground with stabilisers or outriggers fitted exactly as the instruction manual shows. Never use or move a tower in strong winds, and always lock the castors before climbing.

Towers should be built by a competent person following the manufacturer’s instruction manual. For business use, we recommend that anyone building towers completes recognised tower assembly training, such as a PASMA course.

Stabilisers or outriggers are required on most towers once they pass a certain height, and they must be fitted on freestanding towers as shown in the manual. They widen the base and greatly reduce the risk of the tower tipping.

Only with the correct equipment. Use adjustable legs or base plates to level the tower on uneven ground, and never stack bricks or blocks under the wheels. If the ground is soft, use sole boards to spread the load.

Check the tower before every use for damaged, bent or missing parts. On construction sites, towers should be inspected after assembly, after any event that could affect stability such as high winds, and at regular intervals while in use.

Transport and Storage

3 questions

Most domestic towers use compact frames that fit in a typical hatchback with the rear seats folded down. Larger industrial towers may need a van or roof rack. Ask our team for frame sizes before you order.

Store components in a dry place, off the ground, and keep small parts like braces and pins together. Aluminium does not rust, but keeping parts clean and dry helps them last longer.
